Editorial Services

"Here’s the evidence.  I self-published my first novel with no professional input whatsoever and it languished, unread, on a virtual shelf in Amazon’s basement.  Herta Feely served as editor on my second novel and I have just signed a contract with a literary agent. Herta reviewed the manuscript, offered suggestions on the plot, pointed out pieces of confused writing, helped with presentation, and advised on literary agents.  Throughout the process, she was encouraging but always clear in her criticisms; responsive to ad hoc questions; knowledgeable; business-like in approach; and a pleasure to work with."

As an Editor

I’m passionate about reading and writing … and have worked as an editor with hundreds of writers (fiction and non-fiction) over the past 20 years. In 2007, after a brief stint with a literary agency, I established Chrysalis Editorial to serve writers in a variety of capacities – primarily as developmental editor, writing coach, and ghostwriter of memoirs. My services include editing query letters and crafting book proposals to catch the eye of agents and editors. At this point in my career, I take on few clients, but those that I do mostly succeed in finding a publisher. Seeing talented writers receive their due gives me tremendous satisfaction.

Publishing Advice

Speaking of publishing, over the years, I’ve accumulated considerable knowledge of the publishing industry and love guiding and advising writers. Understanding your writing and publishing goals is crucial for navigating the complex process of finding an agent or publisher, whether it's traditional, hybrid, or self-publishing. The world of publishing has changed significantly over the past decade, and you need to be armed with the best and latest information to make good choices.

Manuscript Critiques

I run developmental edits for both fiction (novels & short stories) and nonfiction (memoir & book proposals).

The editor/writer relationship is an important one. You should make sure you and your editor are a good fit

Writing Coach

I provide coaching services for clients with a variety of writing projects. I offer ongoing, one-on-one guidance to enhance your writing and to complete your writing project, whatever it may be (novel, short stories, memoir, non-fiction, book proposal).

Ghostwriting

This includes ghostwriting an entire book or merely a few chapters. The key to excellent ghostwriting requires the writer to capture the author's voice, be passionate about their project, and maintain a good relationship with them.

Consultations

If you've written a few chapters but are not quite sure how to proceed, I’m happy to offer feedback about next steps, to brainstorm plot and subplot, and respond to the overall writing. A one-hour consult on “how to get published” is available and includes agent advice.

"Herta is a fantastic editor and wonderful to work with. She is very honest and thoughtful. As a first-time author, I am grateful that she was able to help me develop my book proposal so that a literary agent offer to represent it. I strongly recommend Herta as an editor for your next writing project."
